Nepal China Academy Secretariat

The Nepal China Academy Annual Report 2023 presents a comprehensive account of the Academy’s organizational activities, membership developments, financial stewardship, and programmatic achievements across the fiscal year — a year marked by renewed bilateral engagement and expanded cultural programming.

Year in Review

The year 2023 witnessed an unprecedented level of bilateral activity. The Academy organized seventeen major events, welcomed forty-three new members, and facilitated three official delegation exchanges between Kathmandu and Beijing. Our scholarship coordination program placed twelve Nepali students in Chinese universities, the highest placement count in the Academy’s history.

Key highlights included the Nepal-China Friendship Seminar series, which drew participation from over two hundred academics, diplomats, and cultural practitioners, and the landmark Chinese Calligraphy Exhibition at Nepal Art Council that attracted more than a thousand visitors across its two-week run.

Financial Summary

The Academy maintained sound financial health throughout the reporting period. Total revenue from membership fees, event sponsorships, and institutional partnerships reached NPR 4.8 million, representing a twelve percent increase over the prior year. Program expenditures were allocated across five priority areas, with cultural exchange and educational programs commanding the largest share at forty-one percent of the operating budget.

  • Cultural Exchange Programs: 41% of operating budget
  • Scholarship Coordination: 22% of operating budget
  • Trade and Economic Cooperation: 15% of operating budget
  • Administrative Operations: 12% of operating budget
  • Publications and Communications: 10% of operating budget

Membership Growth

Active membership grew to 287 individuals, representing educators, researchers, business professionals, students, and cultural practitioners from across Nepal’s seven provinces. The Academy’s outreach beyond the Kathmandu Valley resulted in twelve new members from Pokhara, Biratnagar, and Chitwan — evidence that Nepal-China friendship resonates well beyond the capital.

The Academy’s work is not confined to Kathmandu. Every corner of Nepal benefits from deeper understanding between our two nations, and our growing provincial membership reflects that reality.

From the President’s Foreword

Looking ahead, the report outlines the Academy’s strategic priorities for 2024, including expanded youth engagement programs, the launch of a Chinese language proficiency initiative in partnership with the Confucius Institute, and preparations for the Golden Jubilee celebrations.
